Mirta Aguirre Carreras fue una ilustre intelectual, ensayista brillante, periodista, poeta y crítica de arte del siglo XX cubano. La vida literaria y política se imbrican profundamente en el quehacer de Mirta Aguirre y fue la primera, reflejo de los intereses de la segunda. El estudio de su obra ha sido, en ocasiones, blanco de críticas, por ser defensora del Realismo
Socialista. Sin embargo, aunque en algún momento simpatizara con esa tendencia, fueron su vasta cultura y su conocimiento excepcional, los que la salvaron de caer en dogmatismos. El ensayo que se presenta, enriquecido con entrevistas a destacadas figuras de la cultura cubana, tiene como objetivo profundizar acerca de la vida y obra de esta emblemática mujer, adelantada a su época que se sobrepuso a todo tabú y legó a la posteridad un patrimonio literario de incalculable valor.
Mirta Aguirre Carreras was an illustrious intellectual, a brilliant essayist, a journalist, a poet and an art critic of the Cuban Twentieth Century. Her literary and political life are very interwoven, and the former reflects the interests of the latter. The study of her work has been subjected to criticism, for being a defender of the Socialist Realism. Nevertheless, although she could be sympathetic to this ideas, her wonderful culture and her exceptional knowledge saved her from dogmatism. This bibliographic review which is enriched with some interviews, is aimed at analyzing further the work and life of this emblematic woman, ahead of her time, who knew how to shatter all the taboos and bequeathed an invaluable literary heritage.
